The Bernoullis were a merchant family that fled religious persecution in Antwerp and settled in Basel, Switzerland, where they became the most prolific dynasty of mathematicians the world has known. The story begins in earnest with two brothers — Jacob I (1654–1705) and Johann I (1667–1748) — who between them helped turn Leibniz's new calculus into a working engine of science, and it continues through Johann's son Daniel (1700–1782), who gave his name to the principle behind flight and fluid flow.
The genealogical pattern is one of talent both inherited and fiercely contested. Jacob taught his younger brother Johann mathematics, and Johann in turn taught his own sons — but the family gift arrived braided with rivalry. Jacob and Johann competed openly over problems like the shape of a hanging chain and the brachistochrone curve, publishing against each other as much as against outsiders. Johann then transferred that jealousy to his son Daniel: when the two tied for a prize from the Paris Academy, Johann is said to have thrown Daniel out of the house, and he later published a work on hydraulics backdated to appear to precede Daniel's own book on the subject.
The talent did not thin out with the founders. A third generation — Johann II, Nicolaus, Johann III, and Jacob II — held mathematics and physics chairs across Europe, several of them succeeding one another in the very same professorship at Basel that had sparked the first brothers' feud.
In total the family produced eight noted mathematicians in three generations, a concentration so unusual that when Daniel once introduced himself to a fellow traveler as 'Daniel Bernoulli,' the man reportedly scoffed in disbelief, as if he had claimed to be Isaac Newton.
