Hawkins, Indiana has no single ruling family. What Stranger Things builds instead is a network of broken households that assemble, over four seasons, into one improvised clan. Joyce Byers raises Jonathan and Will alone after Lonnie leaves; Karen and Ted Wheeler raise Nancy, Mike and Holly inside a suburban normalcy that nobody can talk to anybody about; Jim Hopper polices the town while drinking through the death of his daughter Sara. The tree is worth reading because the biological lines are the weakest ones in it.
The Byers side runs on substitution. Lonnie, who mocked Will's sensitivity and came back during the 1983 search hoping for a settlement, is deeply distrusted by his son Jonathan, who becomes the father his brother needs and the co-parent his mother leans on; it is Joyce who finally throws Lonnie out. Joyce's brief safety with Bob Newby ends when the demodogs kill him; her long bickering with Hopper is finally named as love, largely by Murray Bauman, the conspiracy journalist who functions as the family's blunt therapist. Across town the Wheelers fracture quietly: Karen's loneliness drifts toward Billy Hargrove, Ted notices nothing, and Nancy's guilt over Barbara Holland's death rewrites her whole life.
Eleven's line is the tree's true fracture. Born Jane Ives to Terry Ives and her boyfriend Andrew Rich, who died in Vietnam before her birth, she was taken at birth by Dr. Martin Brenner, whom she calls Papa. Terry is left catatonic by electroshock, looping the same memory; her sister Becky calls the stolen-baby story a delusion for years. In the lab Eleven acquires a sibling instead of a mother: Henry Creel, subject One, who murdered Virginia and Alice Creel in 1959 and let his father Victor be institutionalized for it, and who returns as Vecna. Adopted by Hopper's cabin, Mike's basement and finally the Byers household, Eleven finds in Max Mayfield the sister neither had, while Max survives Neil and Billy Hargrove's inherited violence next door.
The first four seasons, released from 2016 through 2022, depict events from 1983 through 1986, and the tree's shape is the point: nearly every functioning bond in it is chosen rather than inherited. Steve Harrington, left to himself by largely absent parents, becomes Dustin Henderson's big brother. Claudia Henderson dotes obliviously; Lucas and Erica Sinclair wage sibling war under conventional parents, Charles and Sue, kept firmly outside the secret. Even the pets belong on the chart, since Dart ate Mews. The genogram of Hawkins argues that families in crisis do not hold together by blood but by who keeps showing up.
